Early Work
Degree work.
A selection of woven textiles created when studying BA (Hons) Crafts at Manchester Metropolitan University, Crewe and Alsager Faculty. For my Final Major Project and degree show. 1995. Depicting my initial interest in 3D woven textiles. Inspiration came from historical reference to costume and undergarments, Collars and Ruffs, The Gallery of Costume (formerly the Gallery of English Costume) -Platt Hall, Manchester. Identifying the different ways in which the female form, in particular the torso, can be physically and forcibly changed through the wearing of constrictive items of clothing, through to the physical change created during pregnancy. The woven structures translated both aspects of the changing physical form and some marks created by the changes. As the idea developed, so too did the sources of inspiration, as can be seen in some of the sketchbook pages for this project.
